Just over thirty years ago I was walking through some woodland when I came upon this tree that had been struck by lightening. There was something about the tree that made me stop and gaze at it. It was a very windy and overcast day, not really the weather for taking photographs, but there was something about the tree that reminded me of a crucifix that used to stand on a shelf in my parents bedroom. I took my camera out of the rucksack and was deciding where best to take it from when suddenly the sun broke through the clouds and cast the shadow of a leaf onto the tree. I managed to take three frames and then the light had gone. I returned many times over the next five years but the light and the shadow could never be repeated. On my last visit the tree had been felled. Copies of the image are now in many homes and churches worldwide.
